Your Questions Answered:
(message me if you have a question)
Do I ship globally?
Only UK addresses via the website, standard class inlcuded in my pricing.
Please message me via the Contacts Page for pricing for other destinations.
Is it a waxed fabric?
No, its not to be confused with the equally wonderful, but very different, wax-printed textiles from West Africa. Shweshwe does not have any wax added.
Does Shweshwe require a pre-wash?
Yes!
Why pre-wash?
Shweshwe is a true heritage fabric, still made the same way since the Industrial Revolution. Like all cotton textiles of the past, it’s coated in a protective starch to guard against rot, bugs, and vermin — so remember to give it a pre-wash before cutting and sewing.
How do I pre-wash Shweshwe?
-
Wash separately
-
No need to add any detergents
-
40 degree cycle
-
Do not tumble dry nor dry clean
-
Warm iron
Dimensions after washing?
-
Width: 89cm (35 inches)
-
FAB quarters: approx. 41 x 48.5cm (16 x 19 inches) after washing
FAB vs FAT Quarter?
I use the term ‘FAB Quarter’ to reflect the slightly narrower width of authentic Shweshwe compared to a standard FAT quarter — it’s part of what makes this fabric so unique and special!
